Common Questions About Martial Arts for Adults
I’ve never done martial arts before. Is that okay?
Absolutely! Many of our adult students started with zero experience. We teach beginners every day and will guide you every step of the way.
What if I have previous martial arts training?
If you’ve previously trained in Taekwondo, we’ll perform an assessment to determine the best place for you to continue your journey.
If you’ve trained in another martial art, we’ll evaluate your experience and help you transition into our program while recognizing the skills you’ve already developed.
What if I’m on the fence and don’t know if martial arts is right for me?
The best way to find out is to schedule a Meet & Greet. You’ll have the opportunity to:
- Tour our facility
- Meet our instructors
- Learn about our program
- Ask questions
- Share your goals
- We’ll determine together whether we’re the right fit for each other. There’s absolutely no pressure.
Do I need to be in shape before I start?
Not at all. In fact, that’s our job. As long as you are healthy enough to participate (or have your doctor’s clearance if needed), you can start exactly where you are today. Whether you’re looking to lose weight, build strength, improve endurance, or simply become a healthier version of yourself, we’ll help you become the best version of yourself.
What if I’m not flexible?
That’s perfectly okay. Very few adults begin martial arts feeling flexible. Our instructors will safely help you improve your mobility and flexibility over time. You don’t need to be flexible to start—we’ll help you become as flexible as your body safely allows.
Can couples train together?
Absolutely! In fact, many of our students do. Several couples tell us martial arts has become their weekly date night. Instead of dinner and a movie, they’re investing in each other while improving their health, learning self-defense, working toward common goals, and making lifelong memories together.
Am I too old to start?
Absolutely not. Adults begin martial arts in their 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond. You’re never too old to become healthier, stronger, more confident, and more capable.
Will I be training with a bunch of kids?
No. Approximately 50% of students at THE STUDIO are adults, so we are able to offer classes specifically designed for adults and teens, so you’ll be training alongside other adults from all walks of life.
Can parents train while their children are in class?
Absolutely! One of the unique features of our program is our Family Class. Parents can train in the adult curriculum while their children are training with students their own age—all during the same class time. It’s a fantastic way for families to spend quality time together while everyone is learning and growing.

What should I expect during class?
Every class is designed to be positive, welcoming, and encouraging.
A typical class includes:
- Mobility and joint movement
- Stretching and flexibility
- Warm-up and fitness
- Technical instruction
- Traditional Taekwondo
- Practical self-defense
- Kicking, striking, drills, and combinations
- Sport Taekwondo when appropriate
- Cool down and encouragement
Whether your goal is fitness, confidence, self-defense, or earning a black belt, you’ll leave every class feeling accomplished.
What if I only want to learn self-defense?
That’s one of the many benefits of our program. Self-defense is built directly into our curriculum. While learning practical techniques to protect yourself, you’ll also improve your fitness, increase your flexibility, develop confidence, earn rank, and work toward your black belt. You’ll gain much more than self-defense—you’ll develop the physical ability, awareness, and confidence to protect yourself if you ever need to.
Is martial arts a good workout?
Absolutely. Martial arts improves:
- Cardiovascular fitness
- Strength
- Flexibility
- Balance
- Coordination
- Core strength
- Mobility
- Endurance
Best of all, it’s fun, so most people don’t even realize how hard they’re working.
What’s the difference between Taekwondo, Karate, Kung Fu, and Jiu-Jitsu?
Each martial art has its own history, philosophy, and training emphasis. Taekwondo originated in Korea and is particularly known for dynamic kicking, striking, athletic movement, forms, self-defense, discipline, and character development. Karate originated in Japan and generally emphasizes strikes, blocks, forms, and disciplined technique. Kung Fu comes from China and includes many different systems ranging from softer flowing styles to powerful striking arts. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu developed in Brazil and focuses primarily on grappling, ground fighting, leverage, and submission techniques. There isn’t necessarily one martial art that’s right for every child. We love Taekwondo for kids because it combines athletic development, practical self-defense, traditional martial arts, sport, discipline, confidence, goal setting, and character development into one comprehensive activity.

Is martial arts better than going to the gym?
In our opinion, yes! Both can help you get in shape, but the biggest difference is accountability and community. Many people join a gym with the best intentions but eventually stop going. Martial arts creates consistency because you’re surrounded by instructors and classmates who encourage and support your progress.
Consistency creates results. In addition to getting an incredible workout, you’re constantly learning new skills, setting goals, earning rank, and becoming part of an amazing community. That’s why we believe martial arts is one of the best long-term fitness programs available.
Will martial arts help relieve stress?
Absolutely. Many adults tell us class becomes the best part of their day. It’s an opportunity to unplug from work, clear your mind, improve your health, and leave feeling refreshed, accomplished, and energized.
Will martial arts help me lose weight?
Combined with healthy eating habits, martial arts is an excellent way to lose weight while building strength, endurance, and healthy lifelong habits.
Can martial arts help improve confidence and reduce anxiety?
Absolutely. In fact, we often refer to ourselves as The Confidence Center. Whether you’re an adult or a child, confidence is one of the greatest gifts martial arts provides. As you overcome challenges, accomplish goals, and discover what you’re capable of, your confidence naturally grows. Greater confidence often leads to less anxiety. As you become physically stronger, mentally tougher, and more empowered, everyday challenges become easier to handle. Martial arts doesn’t just strengthen your body—it empowers your mind.
Do I have to spar?
Students first develop a strong technical foundation before participating in controlled sparring. Everything is introduced gradually and safely, and your comfort level is always respected. If you prefer a non-contact version of a martial arts program, we offer Wise Warriors, which is a non-contact self-defense program.
Will I get hurt?
Safety is one of our highest priorities. Our instructors teach progressively and safely. You’ll never be expected to do anything you’re not ready for, and you’ll always work at your own pace. Like any physical activity, occasional bumps and soreness can happen, but our goal is to help you train safely for years to come.
I’m nervous about starting.
That’s completely normal. Almost every adult who walks through our doors feels the same way. Within just a few classes, you’ll realize everyone remembers what it was like to be new, and you’ll quickly become part of our welcoming community.
What should I wear for my first class?
Comfortable workout clothes are perfect. Once you decide to continue, we’ll help you get fitted for your uniform.
How often should I train?
Most adults attend 2–3 classes per week, which provides excellent progress while fitting into busy work and family schedules.
Can I train if I have previous injuries or physical limitations?
In many cases, yes. Every person is different. We’ll discuss any limitations, modify exercises when appropriate, and help you train safely within your abilities. If necessary, we’ll ask that you receive clearance from your physician before beginning. If you should not have impact or make contact, then we recommend our Wise Warrior program, which offers traditonal taekwondo and self-defense, but is no-contact and doesn't include sparring.
Do you offer private lessons?
Yes! Private lessons are a great option for:
- Busy professionals with demanding schedules
- Students who want extra one-on-one attention
- Those preparing for testing or competition
- Students who want to accelerate their progress
- Individuals who simply prefer personalized instruction
Whatever your reason, our instructors can customize a private training program to help you reach your goals.
What makes THE STUDIO different from other martial arts schools?
We believe it starts with professionalism and purpose. Although martial arts schools are not governed by a licensing agency, we choose to hold ourselves to exceptionally high standards through the Moo Do Taekwondo Association and the Kukkiwon (World Taekwondo Headquarters). Our instructors maintain extensive certifications, including instructor certifications, CPR certification, and continuing education. Our curriculum is standardized, proven, and continually updated to provide the highest quality instruction possible.
Just as important as our credentials is our culture. Our instructors are knowledgeable, humble, caring, and passionate about helping others. Taekwondo changed their lives, and teaching is their opportunity to give back by helping others become stronger, healthier, more confident, and more successful.
At THE STUDIO, we’re not simply teaching kicks and punches—our mission is to help our students become the strongest version of themselves—physically, mentally, and emotionally.
When you train at THE STUDIO, you’ll gain:
- Practical self-defense skills
- Better health and fitness
- Increased confidence
- Stress relief
- Greater flexibility and mobility
- Goal setting and accountability
- A supportive community
- Lifelong friendships
- The opportunity to earn a black belt
Many of our adult students tell us they came looking for a workout—but stayed because they found a second family.
How do I get started?
It’s easy. Simply schedule a Meet & Greet, tour our facility, meet our instructors, tell us about your goals, and let us answer all of your questions. We’ll help determine whether our program is the right fit for you—and if it is, we’ll help you begin an incredible journey toward becoming the best version of yourself.
We can’t wait to meet you!
